This is a travel note. Why I joined this activity team? The
reason was some higher management DIDN’T WANT to go there and passed this “mission”
to us (junior). It was not a matter for me because I can finish my teaching on
schedule and I am interested on this kind of program, so I was ok to join it (with
the other words, they got the power to refuse but I/we actually CANNOT REFUSE).
This 4 Days 3 Nights program was held by an organization which was called
Wilderness Malaysia. The objectives of this program were to train the students’ ability to
live in harsh environment, to develop teamwork among teammates and to build their
leadership. For my role, I was one of the lead teachers and also an observer. I
had to observe what activities were included in this program and was this program
really helpful for students.
First day (31/8)
With Mr. Ting’s helps, another lead teacher Mdm. Tan and I
reached LCCT KL/KLIA2 at 5.00 am. When all lead teacher (Mr. Chiang, Ms. Yap,
Mdm. Tan and me) and 40 participants arrived, we gathered in front of the
custom and did the last checked. We took group photos, then boarded the plane!
Tuba。
We arrived Langkawi Island around 8.30am. After met the
person in charged Ms. Christina, we went to the jetty by bus then took small
boots to our “final destination”: - Tuba Island.
We were divided to 2 groups. There were 20 students and 2
teachers in each group. Mdm. Tan and I were arranged in 2nd group
while Mr. Chiang and Ms. Yap were arranged in 1st group. I followed the
2nd group in these few days, therefore what I wrote was about 2nd
group’s activities. For the other group story… I don’t know lar. There were two
Trainers Mr. K and Mr. A led the 2nd group. After putting down the
luggage and the students passed their mobile phone and wallet to the organizer,
the 2nd group started ice breaking activity. Although the students
came from same school and same year, most of them still didn’t know each other
and less communication. Under Mr. K’s leading, 20 students sat in round shape
and started to do self-introduction. Besides playing some games, the trainers
wanted the group came out with a group name.
After discussion, the below was the group name and slogan:
“B for !” “Botak!”
“B for !” “Best!”
“North South East West!”
“Botak is the Best!”
So the “Botak” group was set up in this morning (there was
because the team leader called botak himself, so all of them decided to use “Botak”
as the group name).
In the afternoon, we started to pack after having the lunch
(pear). Trainers gave us a special bag which was called “dry bag”, and we had
to put our necessary stuff into our dry bags. We put our own luggage into the
storeroom after packing the dry bags. We took the dry bags and PFD, and went to
our camp site by van.
The camp site was near to the sea in a forest. We put down
our stuffs, and then Mr. K told us that this camp site would be divided into
three parts: tent site, kitchen, and toilet. While all of us still blur-ing,
Mr. K taught us how to build up the tent. Actually I had joined the similar
program during university so I knew how to set up the tent. Because of cloudy
weather, Mr. K and Mr. A set up a big tent near to the kitchen when we were
setting up the tent. After setting up the tent, Mr. A taught us how to install
the toilet and told us the importance of hygiene.

Mr. A explained how to install and to use toilet bowl
Students were installing toilet
Boys and Girls visited their Toilet

Tuba
Mr. A taught us about the kayak after we finished set up the
tent. First of all, he introduced the parts of kayak & paddle, lastly he
taught us how to do the kayaking but kayaking was the activity of the second
day…… In the evening, we gathered under the big tent and checked the food
materials, then prepared the dinner. In Botak group, there was only one student
knew how to cook (Actually Mdm. Tan knew how to cook too). At this moment, the
students were flurry. Mdm. Tan gave some hints so that students could well
prepare the first dinner in Tuba Island.
Before cooking, Mr. K divided all the students into three small
groups: Leader, Kitchen and Hygiene group, each group had their own duty.
Kitchen group needed to prepare the meal for everyone, Hygiene group had to
clean up all the food box and equipment, and Leader group need to brief the
next plan to us. After having the dinner, Mr. K called up the Leader group
members and gave them a briefing about next day plan while Hygiene group was
cleaning the stuff and Kitchen group was tidy up the place.
At 7 pm, Leader group gathered all of us and told us that
next day plan (by using English Language) like wake up time, breakfast time and
when should finish all the jobs; at the same time, Kitchen group announced that
the breakfast tomorrow will be fried mee hoon. Lastly we tidied up all the
things and covered them with a tarp. Then it was sleeping time… it was the
earliest sleeping time (about 9.30pm) in this 4 days 3 nights camp……
As this place was not big, my tent was near to two students’
tents (2 students each tent) so I could hear all of their talk issues at night……
and I did.
Second day (1/9)
The main activity on second day was kayaking. Kayaking will
make me wet so I didn’t switch on my cell phone camera function. It means,
there were NO any photos about this day.
Dry
Bag,
Kitchen group soaked the mee hoon in the water last night so
that they could start to cook the mee hoon after they woke up and did the wash
& brush. While preparing breakfast, Kitchen group prepared lunch too: the
menu was rice with sardine and fried long bean. Other students did their own
thing like went to the toilet with a group of people, kept the dry bags because
we will go to the next camp site by kayaking later.
Morning Scramble Egg
Floatation Device」。
Before going to the sea, we did exercises (and had a dance).
Then Mr. A and Mr. K taught us how to use PFD. The word “PFD” had been stated
in the paragraph before, actually it was life jacket and its full name is “Personal
Floatation Device”. They taught us the right way to wear the PFD (before that
we just wore it as anyway), then divided us into two group and brought us to
the sea and let us floating on the sea. In our group, there were only one or
two students knew swimming. When we were brought to the deeper part some girls
who didn’t know how to swim started screaming… Our Trainer called this as “water
confident”, I thought they wanted us not to scare to the water and we could
stay calm down if drop into the sea accidentally…
Dry
The next thing we learned was how to capsize the kayak and
turned it back then climbed back to the kayak. This training was very hard so
Mr. K and Mr. A trained us two-by-two, and made sure that all of us including
teacher had learned this skill properly. Other members who were waiting for training
tried to put their own dry bag into the kayak. However, there was one pair of
kayak group was capsized three times during training…
After training, Mr. A also taught us some signals of
kayaking by using paddle or whistle. Mr. A was proficient in kayaking so he was
teaching us very detail. Then, we pushed the kayak to the sea and started
KAYAKING!!!
Excellent
We started our kayaking at 12.00pm. After one and half hour
we had our lunch (rice with sardine and fried long bean) on a small jetty.
While we were having our lunch, we saw another group: Excellent Zero group was
kayaking from another side to our side. Due to the organizer’s plan, Botak group
and Excellent Zero group should exchange the camp side in the second day
activity, so we must arrive their camp site before evening.
Reban!
We took long time on kayaking, it was (small) raining in the
half way. Besides, there was a student fall into the sea during kayaking.
Finally, we arrived Batu Reban before our last destination!!
We took a rest at the beach at Batu Reban (some students played,
pee, and took photos there), then we continued our journey and reached the camp
site around 5.00pm.
We pushed the kayak to land, walked to the camp site and put
on the PFD, allocated the tents, then all of us put our things into tents and
cleaned our body, changed clothes, gathered under the big tent and prepared the
things we needed (like food). While everyone was busy, Mr. A called up the
Leader group and told them the next task. Besides, the Leader group also had to
confirm the dinner will end up on time because we had to do the de-briefing at
night.
Photo below was our dinner in that evening: rice with fried
cabbage and scramble egg, and chicken ball soup with 3 packs of gourmet powder.
晚上我們收拾了所有東西,和做了de-briefing(和第一天睡前做的事情類似,就是説心裏的感覺什麽的)後,就是休息時間,就這樣今天的活動就到此結束。
We took rest after keeping all the stuffs and did the
de-briefing at night (similar to the first day what we had done, it was an activity
to speak out our feeling during this program). That’s all the activity records
on second day.
Third Day (2/9)
We woke up and washed at 5.30am. Our breakfast was
cereal (with milk) so we didn’t need to put the tarp on the floor and didn’t make fire. This would make
us easier to keep all the stuffs before leaving the camp site. When
everything was settled, we did some exercises and games while waiting for
the vans. The vans arrived at 8.30am. We took our own PFD &
own stuffs
and left
the
camp site.
We went back to the jetty (we called it as “base
camp”)
and met with Excellent Zero team. At that time we received a bad news: sea
activities were forced to be canceled because of the 1.5 meter wave height. (Only
four teachers including me knew about it, students still didn’t.)
Excellent
We started to keep our own luggage, and washed the empty dry
bags. Then all members sat in their own group (Botak group and Excellent Zero
group). The trainers led them to play some games. The seven games were: 1) pass
a small ball by using both legs; 2) five people changed their position with
another five people with some rules; 3) lift up a 1.5 liter bottle (with water
inside) by a big tarp and take it to appointed location; 4) learn “reef knot” then
tight a reef knot by 20 people without release hands; 5) “electric shock” (I
don’t know how to explain this game; 6) connect the longest and shortest line
by using their bodies or any wearing (not includes pants or shirts); 7) one of the
trainers Mr. Tan gave a hint and all members need to group with enough person &
did appointed action (this was a 40 person game). At last all of them was divided
into 5 small groups and shared their experiences.
We had our lunch at 12.00pm. Our lunch was prepared by the organizer:
it was rice with chicken.
After that we went to a secondary school by vans. There was
a small hill behind this school and our activity at noon was HIKING! Actually
our original plan was hiking or jungle trekking but the plan canceled because
of Leptospirosis. Few days before government lift the ban but our plan was
still not hiking or jungle trekking. I
believed that it was the Plan B if we couldn’t go for sea activities.
Licin」。
We hiked up the hill in two groups. We enjoyed the beautiful
view and took photos, then we went down…… Our trainer called this hill as “Bukit
Licin”.
We back to the base camp and took our own luggage then went
to a small chalet. There was our sleeping place on the third day and all of us
could take bath at this place (we didn’t take bath for 3 days). At 4.30pm, all people
already set up their tent, took bath, and prepared the dinner. For me, I walked
around and took photos…… When one of the trainers Ms. N asked us whether we
(teachers) need the barbeque or not, all of us said yes. The organizer didn’t prepare
the food for barbeque (actually it was not included in dinner), then Ms. N went
out to buy the food…… but we need to pay for it……
Barbeque at Night
At night, Mr. K and Mr. A led the last de-briefing of Botak
group.
Fourth Day (3/9)
Swing。
Mahsuri去!
After eating roti canai as breakfast, the weather was not
good…… but we received a good news: there was good weather at sea so we could
run only one sea activity: Giant Swing. All members went to the small jetty
after they kept the tents. Then, we went to a big sail ship named Puteri
Mahsuri by small boots.

Giant
Giant
Excellent
Swing)。
Botak group was brought to the bow of the ship after all
students were on the ship. Mr. A and Mr. K taught us how to wear the safety device/equipment
to avoid any accident during the activity (Giant Swing). They climbed up and
played the Giant Swing one by one. This activity was carried on quickly (either Botak group or
Excellent Zero group) because pressed for time. This activity was from 9.00am
(starting explain about the safety equipment) until 11.40am (last person, Mdm.
Tan played
Giant Swing).
Lastly we were called to the stern of the ship and started the last
activity: Giving Participation Certificate! We opened up the envelope and
found that the date was wrong! And some of us including me found
typing error of the name! Finally we returned it back and asked them to redo again.
Pulau
Finally this program finished, we backed to Langkawi Island from Puteri
Mahsuri ship by taking small boots and didn’t go back to the Pulau Tuba. After
returning
the PFD and got back students’ own wallets & cell phones,
we went for lunch and bought some souvenir. At 2.00pm we arrived the airport
and waited for the plane.
We reached LCCT KL/KLIA2 at 6.00 pm. After giving the last advice to all
students, all of us dismissed and went home.
